Josep Borrell calls on Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to de-escalate

19/09/2022 (Agence Europe)On Friday 16 September, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, the ceasefire agreed on the same day between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and called on both countries to respect its implementation. On Friday, violent clashes broke out along the border between the two countries, leaving dozens dead. Both sides accuse each other of using heavy artillery and of not respecting the ceasefire. “We call for any differences to be solved by peaceful, diplomatic means”, said Josep Borrell. He added that the EU reiterates “its offer to provide assistance, as well as continued active political support for stability and prosperity in the region”. So far, Moscow has been acting as an intermediary in the conflict, as both countries are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO). (LM)
