EU wine production to remain stable in 2022, says Copa-Cogeca

According to the forecasts communicated on Friday 16 September by the EU’s agricultural organisations and cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca), EU wine production in 2022/2023 is expected to remain stable compared to the previous campaign, but is not expected to reach the five-year average (2017-2021).

The three main producing countries, Italy, France and Spain, are expected to produce 130.2 million hectolitres of wine, a slight increase (+1.1%) on the 128.7 million hectolitres produced in 2021/2022 and a slight decrease (-2.1%) on the five-year average of 132.9 million hectolitres. Yield reductions are recorded in most other producing countries.

Overall, the 2022/2023 crop is affected by dry spells and hot temperatures in Europe leading to an earlier harvest and reduced yields. Copa-Cogeca expects excellent quality wines, however.

Olive oil. On 14 September, Copa-Cogeca published its harvest estimates for olive oil, which are worrying. Total EU olive oil production (2022/2023) will be much lower than in 2021/2022, with a drop of more than 35% compared to the previous marketing year. A similar downward trend is expected for table olives (-30%). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
