29/08/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 26 August, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, condemned the air strikes in Mekele, the capital of Tigray, which led to the death of civilians on the same day. “I urge again for the respect of International Humanitarian Law. Civilians are not targets. I call on all parties to engage in peace talks and to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need.” The day before, he had spoken out against the theft of fuel for humanitarian operations from the World Food Programme and called for an immediate end to hostilities in the north of the country (see EUROPE 13008/19).
