EU RESPONSE TO COVID-19 / Health

ECDC publishes several plausible long-term trajectories for SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

On Monday 29 August, the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) published a selection of plausible long-term qualitative trajectories for the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic. ECDC also publishes considerations on the implications of these different scenarios for public health preparedness and response.

The public health elements discussed, in response to different scenarios of the evolution of the pandemic, may include, but are not limited to: surveillance and early warning, risk communication, vaccination and other medical countermeasures, non-pharmaceutical interventions, and infection prevention and control measures.

The different scenarios of plausible trajectories of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic cover the period from 2022 to 2032. The ECDC points out that the pandemic may evolve from one scenario to another depending on several elements: the evolution of the virus, the degree of immunity of the population and societal developments in the response to SARS-CoV-2. This 29 August document should be able to feed into the work of developing strategic objectives for the response to viruses.
