18/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – On 18 July the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre published its report on the state of droughts in the EU in July 2022, based on data from the European Drought Observatory (EDO). The report states that due to the lack of rainfall and heat waves since May, the situation in terms of drought is deteriorating and expanding. Drought is affecting the flow of many rivers in Europe and increasing competition for water resources. Drought is affecting agriculture (crop size and potential) and the energy sector (hydropower and power plant cooling). According to recent maps, 46% of the European territory is in warning conditions and 11% in alert conditions. Drought conditions are expected to persist over the next 3 months in several territories.
