The European Commission adopted, on Thursday 30 June, a new strategy to “drive” its internal digital transformation. This strategy, which continues and complements the broad guidelines set out in the previous one, adopted in 2018, is based on several major axes.
In this new version, the emphasis is on fostering the institution’s “digital literacy” by empowering staff and training them to “equip them with the necessary skills and tools to ‘think digital first’”.
In addition, the Commission wants to take better account of technologies - and their developments - in future policy-making so that they are better adapted to the digital decade.
Finally, the text also foresees that the Commission services rethink their activities and focus on the re-use of the data they have.
“We want to harness the potential of technology in a way that puts people in the centre and secures the sovereignty and resilience of our institution”, commented the Commissioner for Budget and Administration, Johannes Hahn.
The strategy adopted is part of the ‘Path to the Digital Decade’, which should, among other things, strengthen the EU’s sovereignty and leadership in certain digital areas by promoting “inclusive and sustainable policies that serve citizens and businesses” (see EUROPE 12954/35).
