24/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission and the United States issued a joint statement on Tuesday 24 May reaffirming their commitment to work together to strengthen Europe’s energy security, following the decision of Russian company Gazprom to suspend gas exports to Finland, Poland and Bulgaria. Calling the gas being cut off “unjustified and unacceptable”, the Commission and the US say they will continue to work to diversify Europe’s natural gas supply “while we accelerate the deployment of energy efficiency and smart technologies in European homes and businesses”, under the joint Task Force announced on 25 March (see EUROPE 12919/2). The statement also welcomes Finland’s contract to lease a floating liquefied natural gas import terminal from a US supplier. This terminal will be operational before the end of this year.
