MEPs approved by a large majority (515 votes in favour, 32 against and 11 abstentions) the European Commission’s proposal to further liberalise trade with Ukraine. The regulation proposed by the Commission on 27 April will lift all tariffs on imports from Ukraine as well as tariff quotas for one year (see EUROPE 12940/3).
The Association Agreement applied since 2016 between the EU and Ukraine has gradually reduced tariffs on industrial products, certain fruit and vegetables and agri-food products. However, some of these goods are still subject to tariffs or tariff-rate quotas.
Member States are expected to adopt their position at the Economic and Financial Affairs Council on 24 May.
