19/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 19 May, the European Parliament condemned the amendment to the Belarusian Criminal Code introducing the death penalty for “attempted acts of terrorism”, saying that “it can be easily abused by the regime to liquidate its political opponents”. In the joint resolution adopted by a show of hands, MEPs once again denounced the regime’s systematic repression of civilians, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including trade union representatives. They call on the Commission and its Member States to support and protect human rights activists and civil society in Belarus. In the context of the war in Ukraine, the European Parliament calls for all sanctions imposed on Russia to also be imposed on Belarus. Read the resolution: https://aeur.eu/f/1qc (CG)
