European Commission says digitalisation of justice in EU still needs improvement

On Thursday, 19 May, the European Commission published its 2022 EU Justice Scoreboard, which notably reveals that there is still progress to be made in Member States in order to digitalise justice.

This tool has been analysing developments in the EU’s justice systems for the past 10 years; according to this year’s edition—despite new measures introduced since the Covid-19 pandemic—Member States need, overall, to accelerate reforms to modernise their systems.

Likewise, access to justice for persons with disabilities varies too much across the EU, according to the scoreboard. Only half of Member States offer specific formats such as Braille or sign language upon request.

Moreover, how citizens and companies perceive judicial independence poses a problem in several Member States. The scoreboard provides indicators on several aspects of judicial independence; however, these [indicators] “do not in themselves allow for conclusions to be drawn about the independence of the judiciaries of the Member States, but [they] represent possible elements which may be taken as a starting point for such an analysis”, the report reads.
