European development ministers will meet in the Foreign Affairs/Development Council on Friday 20 May to discuss the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on world food security, and of the multilateral response to this crisis.
This session, chaired by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, will take place the day after the G7 Development Ministers’ meeting in Berlin (see other news) and the announcement by the World Bank of an investment of more than €70 billion to alleviate food insecurity for the most vulnerable populations in the most exposed countries, in particular in Africa and the Middle East.
For its part, the EU is mobilising €2.5 billion until 2024 to help the most food-insecure regions and is cooperating at international level in the implementation of the FARM initiative (see EUROPE 12919/5).
Over lunch, the ministers will have an informal discussion with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.
Without debate, the ministers will adopt the EU Council decision that will pave the way for the EU to approve an amendment to the International Health Regulations at the next World Health Assembly (Geneva, 22-28 May), as a prelude to a global agreement on future pandemics being negotiated at the WHO (see other news).
