European Commission launches skills partnership for social economy

The European Commission launched on Friday 6 May a “large-scale partnership” for skills development in the proximity and social economy ecosystem, the institution said in a statement.

It brings together social economy organisations, impact investors (such as foundations), microfinance providers, ethical and cooperative banks, vocational education and training providers and regions.

The proximity and social economy sector represents 6.3% of the EU’s active population (2.8 million enterprises and 13 million jobs).

The partnership aims to improve the level of skills, including digital skills, in social entrepreneurship and capacity building for employability. The initiative, supported by dozens of organisations, commits, among other things, to mobilising public and private capital to enable the upgrading and requalification of 5% of the sector’s workforce and entrepreneurs each year to manage the green and digital transitions in the social economy.

This new partnership is part of the ‘Action Plan for the Social Economy’ and the ‘Pact for Skills’.
