Total allowable catch of cod in Svalbard waters set at 19,600 tonnes in 2022 for EU

The Council of the EU is expected to adopt shortly, by written procedure, a Regulation setting the 2022 total allowable catch (TAC) of cod in Spitsbergen (Svalbard) waters for EU vessels at 19,636 tonnes (t).

The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the EU confirmed on Wednesday 27 April the use of such a written procedure to adopt the Regulation in question.

The provisional quota was set at 4,500 tonnes for EU vessels fishing for cod in this area (see EUROPE 12923/25).

As discussions with Norway on a political agreement on fisheries in International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) sub-areas one and two have been concluded, the EU Council should set the Union quota for cod fishing in Svalbard waters for 2022 accordingly to replace the provisional EU quota which expires at the end of April 2022.

Spain gets a catch quota of 9,688 tonnes (4,028 tonnes for Germany, 2,019 tonnes for Portugal, 1,829 tonnes for Poland, and 1,775 tonnes for France). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
