European Commission proposes transposal of new rules of International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas

On Thursday 21 April, the European Commission adopted a proposal to transpose into Community law a set of new rules recently issued by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

The proposal also amends the multi-annual management plan for bluefin tuna in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea.

The proposal includes a number of provisions relating to ICCAT recommendations, such as: - for tropical tuna, capacity limitations, and prohibition of discards caught by purse seiners; - new provisions on the deployment of ‘fish aggregating devices’ (FADs) and observer coverage.

With regard to sharks, the proposal includes updated provisions concerning the collection of data on the shortfin mako. In addition, it provides for the amendment of the Regulation on the multi-annual management plan for bluefin tuna with a declaration of Member States on annual carry-over and certain caging provisions.
