22/04/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 22 April the European Union welcomed the successful conduct of the second round of the presidential elections in Timor Leste, which took place on Tuesday 19 April. It had deployed an election observation mission for this fifth presidential election since the country’s independence in 2002. “The election was peaceful, orderly, and confirms Timorese people’ commitment to democratic values”, the European External Action Service spokesperson said in a statement. On the basis of the provisional official results confirming that the former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner had won the election, the EU “congratulates José Ramos Horta and looks forward to working closely with him, as a reliable partner, in the consolidation of the Timor-Leste-EU relations”, the statement continues.
