In the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Commission announced on Friday, 8 April, that it was going to expedite the funding of military mobility projects by investing €339 million for 22 projects selected from those submitted under the Connecting Europe Facility.
In all, 37 projects that are to be used to establish a sustainable transport network and will have major sections of infrastructure designed for dual use—civil and defence—will receive a total of €425 million.
“Europe’s transport infrastructure is critical for our security; this is why we are taking concrete measures to support investments that make it fit not only for civilian use but also for our defence. [...] In addition, we also decided to advance the 2nd Military Mobility call originally planned for later this year”, declared European Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean.
This decision by the European Commission comes at a time when around 60 MEPs from several political groups in the European Parliament have (on Wednesday, 6 April) called for military mobility projects to receive more funding as soon as possible (see EUROPE 12928/7).
