On Friday 8 April, the Commission published a new ‘roadmap’ listing emerging low-carbon technologies for energy-intensive industries that can be supported by the European Research Area (ERA).
The roadmap calls for an assessment of the possibility of creating an industrial alliance or similar platform for low-carbon technologies “building on the Horizon Europe Processes4Planet and Clean Steel partnerships”. The Innovation Fund and InvestEU should also be used to the full.
“There is a gap between the current overall research and innovation (R&I) investments across energy-intensive sectors and the amount needed to reach Green Deal emission targets”, the document says.
The biggest gap concerns “investments in the coming years for ‘first-of-a-kind’ (FOAK) installations and further deployment of technologies currently at high technology readiness levels”.
The institution advocates a series of actions to facilitate authorisation for FOAK installation, building on what is being done in the framework of the European Chips Act, the Regulatory Hubs Network (RegHub) and the REFIT programme.
Improving knowledge about the patenting of green technologies is also important.
