ECDC provides guidance for TB testing and screening of populations arriving from Ukraine

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is providing recommendations on the testing and screening for TB of populations arriving from Ukraine in the context of the Russian military aggression.

The ECDC has published an information note for policy makers, national health authorities and staff at refugee reception centres.

Ukraine is a tuberculosis high-priority country. It is one of the countries most affected by this disease in the World Health Organization European region. It has one of the highest rates of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

The ECDC is not recommending universal testing or screening for populations arriving from Ukraine to a Member State, but is recommending testing, screening and even preventive treatment for specific groups.

Information on these at-risk groups, the tests and the methods for identifying at-risk groups is detailed in the note.

The ECDC recalls that with the activation of the so-called ‘Decision on the temporary protection’, Ukrainian refugees arriving in a European State have similar access to health care as citizens of that Member State (see EUROPE 12903/1).
