New human resources strategy and communication on climate neutrality by 2030

On Tuesday 5 April the European Commission adopted a new human resources strategy aimed at providing modern workplaces and fulfilling careers that will attract the best talent from the Member States.

It also adopted a communication (‘Greening the Commission’) setting out how the institution will become climate-neutral by 2030. The Commission will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels and offset the remaining emissions with carbon removals.

The human resources strategy focuses on three strategic priorities: - an attractive workplace; - faster and more agile selection and recruitment (the Commission will also work with under-represented Member States to shape a better geographical balance among its staff); - a flexible and rewarding career for all staff.

The development of a new Human Resources Strategy for the Commission is part of President von der Leyen’s mission letter tot to Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn. The strategy was developed following an extensive consultation process with Commission staff and management, as well as key stakeholders.
