31/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 30 March, the European Commission opened a public consultation on improving the management and coordination of the railways in order to increase the share of rail traffic in international freight and passenger transport. Faced with the sector’s perceived lack of competitiveness, which “struggles to attract customers” and an “inefficient” management and lack of transparency and coordination, the Commission proposes several cumulative options. These include the refinement of the current legal framework, the overall modernisation and harmonisation of rules, procedures and tools, and the centralisation of decision-making and operational functions at European level. This last option could complement the modernisation of the rules, through an operational body at network level, centralising certain decision-making and operational functions.
