To better tackle nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in air, water and soil, the European Commission is preparing an action plan for integrated nutrient management and is seeking input from all interested parties until 26 April.
The European Commission’s initiative is expected to take the form of a Communication in the fourth quarter as part of the ‘European Green Deal’.
The action plan for integrated nutrient management is intended to contribute to reducing nutrient losses by at least 50% while ensuring that soil fertility is not impaired. It will complement the EU’s Zero Pollution Action Plan.
It will look at all nitrogen and phosphorus cycles and cover all environmental media (air, water, sea and soil) and all relevant sources of pollution - agriculture, industry, cities, waste, energy, and transport. It will identify policy gaps with a view to proposing a more coherent and integrated approach to pollution reduction throughout the nutrient cycles.
