EU disburses €300 million in macrofinancial assistance to Ukraine

The European Commission announced on Friday 11 March that it would provide Ukraine with €300 million in macrofinancial assistance to enable this European third country invaded by Russia to honour its financial commitments.

This is the first disbursement to the Ukrainian authorities of half of the first tranche of the €1.2 billion macrofinancial assistance agreed urgently by the European Union before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine (see EUROPE 12889/11).

According to the European Commission, another instalment of €300 million is expected to be paid next week, and the second instalment of €600 million should come later this year, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding between the EU and Ukraine, which sets out the conditions to be met by the Ukrainian authorities in return for the financial support.

The European Commission is already preparing a seventh financial assistance programme to support Ukraine in the longer term.

Since 2014, the EU and European financial institutions have provided the Ukrainian authorities with over €17 billion in grants and loans.
