10/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – The end of short-haul flights in the EU for which a rail connection already exists could reduce Russian oil imports by €2 billion. This is the conclusion of an analysis by the NGO Greenpeace published on 9 March, which calls on the EU to ban such flights. Moreover, the NGO argues, the total amount could actually be even higher, due to soaring prices. Russian oil accounts for 27% of the fuel used by aircraft on short-haul flights today. “Using less energy is the quickest and easiest way to stop funding Putin and tackle climate change”, said Herwig Schuster, a Greenpeace spokesperson. The NGO also called on EU leaders to phase out the sale of new combustion engine cars by 2028. (TM)
