10/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – The NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called on the heads of state or government of the Member States, on Thursday 10 March, to provide the EU with a system for protecting its information space. The heads of state or government, says RSF, could instruct the European Commission to prepare a legislative text that would allow national bodies to provide “proportionate and strictly regulated responses” to propaganda and disinformation activities originating from third states. Such a protection system, RSF believes, could be incorporated into the European Media Freedom Act, currently being prepared by the Commission (see EUROPE 12858/20). RSF’s appeal comes as the EU adopted a decision on 1 March to ban the Russian state media RT and Sputnik from broadcasting on its territory (see EUROPE 12901/5). (TM)
