10/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – It was announced on 10 March that the European Commission had recommended on Wednesday 9 March that the EU Council open negotiations for a status agreement between Frontex and the Republic of Moldova in order to assist the latter in dealing with refugees from Ukraine. This status agreement will allow Frontex “to assist the Moldovan border guards in effectively managing the current situation on the border with Ukraine. More than 250,000 people have fled the war in Ukraine and found refuge in Moldova”, according to a statement. This agreement will specifically allow for the deployment of Frontex teams to carry out border management tasks, including registration and border controls, under the leadership of the Moldovan authorities, to address these challenges. The current cooperation between Frontex and Moldova is based on a working agreement concluded in 2008. (SP)
