03/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 3 March, the European Commission launched a public consultation on the revision of the Air Services Regulation. In particular, it wants to see the financial resilience of air carriers and the regulatory framework improved. Several options are being assessed, such as the introduction of a prudential regime to promote ‘capital buffers’ for air carriers. Capital requirements could be increased and made conditional on the granting of operating licences, to ensure the resilience of players in times of crisis. Changes could also be made to give Member States more flexibility to limit traffic in response to a sudden crisis. The future legislative initiative could also include guidance requiring carriers to clearly display their refundable and non-refundable price components.
