02/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 1 March, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) published a scientific opinion (https://aeur.eu/f/kj ) crucial to the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It was welcomed by the European Commission. The opinion contains recommendations on which antimicrobials and groups of antimicrobials should be reserved exclusively for the treatment of infections in humans, as the use of antimicrobials in animals contributes to the development of AMR. This scientific analysis, the first of its kind in the world, systematically evaluates all types of antimicrobials. It paves the way for the forthcoming adoption of legislation listing antimicrobials for human use only. The EMA opinion was formulated at the request of the Commission by a group of experts (doctors, microbiologists, veterinarians). Discussions with Member States on the rapid adoption of the antimicrobial list will start soon. (LC)
