On Tuesday 1 March, the European Commission launched a call for contributions to develop a European strategy for care which aims to strengthen the quality of long-term care, education, and early childhood care within the framework of the European Pillar of Social Rights.
The initiative was foreseen in the Action Plan of the European Pillar of Social Rights (see EUROPE 12668/6) and has been included in the Commission’s 2022 work programme (see EUROPE 12814/4). The European institution intends to present a EU Council recommendation to make better use of EU funds to support people in need of long-term care and their carers.
In addition, the institution intends to present a second EU Council recommendation in the field of early childhood education and care in order to strengthen convergence between Member States and to review the 2002 Barcelona objectives. Here, the Commission wishes to focus on children with disabilities.
The contribution period is open until 29 March. The Commission’s Communication is expected in the third quarter of 2022.
On the same day, the European Commission opened a contribution period, also until 29 March, on a draft recommendation on access to affordable and quality long-term care.
