02/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on 1 March the addition of two names to the register of protected geographical indications (PGIs) and protected designations of origin (PDOs). The Lithuanian PGI ‘Nijolės Šakočienės šakotis’ is a bakery product in the shape of a large truncated cone with a hollow centre, with spiky ‘branches’ of different sizes. The PDO ‘Dehesa Peñalba’ designates the wines produced in the Spanish municipality of Villabáñez (Valladolid). With the surrounding high plains and the presence of a pine forest, the area is protected from adverse weather conditions. ‘Nijolės Šakočienės šakotis’ will be added to the list of 1,573 protected agricultural products and foodstuffs while ‘Dehesa Peñalba’ will be added to the list of 1,623 EU and third country wines already protected.
