10/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, died aged 65 on the night of Monday 10 to Tuesday 11 January. He had been in hospital in Italy since 26 December "due to a serious complication caused by a dysfunction of the immune system", according to his spokesperson, Roberto Cuillo. Halfway through the 2019-2024 legislature, MEPs are set to elect a new president at the Parliament’s plenary session starting on Monday 17 January, in an election where Maltese Christian Democrat Roberta Metsola is the favourite (see EUROPE 12853/20). She will appear before the S&D group on Wednesday 12 January, which has set its conditions for supporting the candidate. (MB)
