On Wednesday, 15 December, the European Commission adopted an extension of the slot relief rules for airlines. These rules will apply until 29 October 2022.
While the usual standards require airlines to use at least 80% of slots to retain their rights, airlines will be able—in a complex economic context due to the Covid-19 pandemic—to only use 64% of slots [to retain them].
“I know the aviation sector is concerned about the new Omicron variant and the recent drop in airline bookings. We are monitoring the situation closely. The Commission has demonstrated throughout the COVID-19 crisis its willingness and ability to act swiftly where needed, and this will remain the case in the coming months”, stated Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean.
Moreover, the ‘justified non-use of slots’ exception following measures taken by a State—which allows airlines to retain their rights—will also be extended until 29 October 2022.
The airline sector, hard hit by the health crisis, has not yet returned to its pre-pandemic level. According to projections made by Eurocontrol (the agency responsible for the safety of air navigation), air traffic in 2022 is expected to reach 89% of 2019 levels.
