European Commission adopts new rules ending most ivory trade in EU

16/12/2021 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 16 December, the European Commission adopted a revised regulation and guidelines on the EU regime governing the ivory trade which suspend trade in raw ivory on the EU market, except for the exclusive purpose of repairing objects containing ancient ivory. This fulfils the EU’s commitment to adopt new measures against elephant poaching and ivory trafficking worldwide. “We want to eliminate any remaining risk that activities in the EU indirectly supply illegal ivory markets abroad”, said Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius. The Commission Regulation will amend Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein and Commission Implementing Regulation (EC) 865/2006.
