A “Clean Hydrogen Partnership” was officially launched with the ambition to implement the EU’s hydrogen strategy on Monday 29 November, marking the opening of the ‘European Hydrogen Week’.
As the successor to the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, this partnership will support research and innovation aimed at the production, storage, distribution, and use of hydrogen.
It should thus contribute “to accelerate the development and deployment of clean hydrogen technologies for the whole economy, in particular for hard to decarbonise sectors”, announced the European Commission in a press release, while recalling the EU’s objectives in this area: to reach at least 6 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2024 and 40 GW by 2030 (see EUROPE 12523/1).
The Partnership will be funded under the Horizon Europe programme to the tune of €1 billion by industry and universities.
Speaking at the opening of the ‘European Hydrogen Week’, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the initiative “a new big step forward to bring innovative technologies from the laboratory to the factory and, ultimately, to European businesses and consumers”.
