29/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, indicated in an article on the social network LinkedIn on Sunday 28 November that he wanted to double the number of ‘unicorns’, referring to start-ups valued at more than $1 billion, in the European Union by the end of the decade. There are currently about 120 of these ‘unicorns’ in Europe. The Commissioner explained that the Digital Europe Programme (€330 million to create digital innovation hubs), the European Recovery and Resilience Plan (around €75 billion is earmarked for SMEs), and the InvestEU initiative could all contribute to the growth of these new European ‘unicorns’. He also indicated that he wanted to facilitate the participation of SMEs in Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and to strengthen the tools in the European Innovation Council (EIC) framework.
