18/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – 11 European associations, including the NGO ECOS and the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), sent a joint letter to MEPs and the Council of the EU on Thursday 18 November asking them to promote flexible electricity consumption (the ability to modulate electricity consumption according to demand) in all end-use sectors, including buildings and industry. The signatory organisations believe that, despite its capacity “to increase energy system efficiency and resiliency”, this aspect is not sufficiently taken into account in the proposals of the European Commission’s climate package (‘Fit for 55’ package) (see EUROPE 12762/1). In particular, they point to the proposed revisions to the Renewable Energy Directive (‘RED II’), the Energy Efficiency Directive (see EUROPE 12762/8) and the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (see EUROPE 12807/6).
