The European Parliament’s Special Committee on Combating Cancer (BECA) needed two meetings to review the 1,537 amendments tabled by the political groups to flesh out the report by Véronique Trillet-Lenoir (Renew Europe, France) on the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (see EUROPE 12764/9).
At the second and final meeting on Monday 8 November, Ms Trillet-Lenoir informed the committee about the parallel work on the text by the shadow rapporteurs. This work is progressing well, she said, including on “the most sensitive subject, that of prevention”.
“Even on this one, we see a convergence approaching, and we will find compromise solutions that are perfectly acceptable”, Ms Trillet-Lenoir said.
In this regard, EPP rapporteur Peter Liese (Germany) welcomed the progress made on “the sticking point”, namely the prevention of alcohol-related risks.
He welcomed the fact that the Parliament was considering a “moderate labelling strategy” for alcohol bottles at this stage, rather than a strategy similar to that implemented for cigarette packets.
Joëlle Mélin (French), rapporteur for the ID group, also called for the points on prevention of alcohol and tobacco consumption to be maintained, but “modulated”. “We are not making a plan to fight against our own citizens” she insisted.
The rapporteurs will meet again for political meetings on 19 November and 2 December, said Ms Trillet-Lenoir, adding that a third meeting could take place, if necessary, before the vote on the report in the BECA committee on 6 December.
