MEP Irene Tolleret questions European Commission on organic salt

MEP Irène Tolleret (Renew Europe, France) questioned the European Commission about the future delegated act on organic salts. The European Parliament Committee on Agriculture will discuss the delegated acts on the organic regulation on 9 November.

Does the Commission intend to follow the guidelines of the expert group, or rather to limit the organic label to products that best meet the requirements of the new organic farming regulation, which will enter into force in 2022?”, the written question says.

Ms Tolleret explained that the Expert Group for Technical Advice on Organic Production (EGTOP) published a report on salt on 6 August indicating that almost all production methods, including mine salt and artificial crystallisation techniques, are eligible for the organic label.

However, the solar technique, based on the natural evaporation of sea water and involving manual production processes, seems to be the only one that is really compatible with the requirements of organic farming, particularly as regards preserving the environment and the natural characteristics of the products”, says Irène Tolleret.

Salts produced from methods that require the use of inputs should not be considered compatible with the notion of an organic farming process, she argues.

Atlantic salt producers are concerned that the arrival of an ‘organic’ label would put all salts in the same ‘basket’.
