05/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Magazine Media Association (EMMA) and theEuropean Newspaper Publishers Association (ENPA) called on EU Member States on Friday 5 November to not adopt the text on fair and contestable markets in the digital sector (DMA) (see EUROPE 12820/5) until “loopholes that will only serve to protect Google and Facebook are closed”. In particular, the publishers’ associations believe that the issue of exempting search engines and social networks from providing a level playing field must be addressed, otherwise “the EU risks handing over its digital markets to these large monopolies”. In addition, EMMA and ENPA are also of the opinion that the common position of the Member States on the subject is disappointing. The two associations already called on co-legislators on 20 October to strengthen the rules in respect of gatekeepers in the context of the DMA (see EUROPE 12816/28). (TM)
