EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis represented the EU at the EU-Central Asia Economic Forum on 5 November in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He met with the Prime Ministers of the Central Asian countries, as well as representatives of the private sector and civil society in the region.
The forum was an opportunity for participants to reiterate their commitment to stronger economic ties between the two blocs. In a joint statement, they said that “all participants called for further strengthening of the trade and economic cooperation between the EU and Central Asia by promoting diversification of trade between the parties, and by strengthening integration of Central Asia states into the international trading system”.
However, they recalled that there is still progress to be made in improving corporate governance and supporting market logics.
“With the right environment to attract investment and support business, greater diversification and resilience is achievable for the economies of Central Asia. But this is not all: Central Asia countries also have an opportunity to promote a post-Covid recovery that is sustainable, digital and inclusive”, said Mr Dombrovskis.
