05/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, considered Brazil’s climate commitments - climate neutrality in 2050 with a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, an end to rampant deforestation by 2028, participation in the methane initiative - to be “crucial” for the conclusion of the EU/Mercosur trade agreement, on Thursday 4 November in Brasilia, following a meeting with the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Alberto Franco França (see EUROPE 12575/16). “Deforestation remains a challenge as the largest source of emissions in Brazil, and the European Union firmly hopes that Brazil will show the maximum level of ambition in this area”, he said. According to him, bilateral cooperation between the EU and Brazil could be much more developed in areas such as renewable energy, security and digital transition. (MB)
