Delegation of MEPs to Washington reiterate need for human-centric regulation of artificial intelligence

Six MEPs from the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a Digital Age (AIDA) visited Washington from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 November to hold a discussion with their American counterparts on the development of AI and the recently launched EU-US Trade and Technology Council (TTC) (see EUROPE 12801/20).

Regarding AI, “we have emphasised the European push for human-centric regulation for the digital domain”, said Dragoş Tudorache (Renew Europe, Romania), indicating that efforts had specifically focused on “identifying areas of potential regulatory convergence”.

In addition, MEPs also addressed the risks that are inherent in future AI developments, which is a topic that is also being discussed in the European Parliament and the Council of the EU (see EUROPE 12812/2).

Finally, members of the AIDA delegation have reaffirmed their willingness to “consolidate and strengthen the TTC” on the basis of an interparliamentary approach between the different European Parliament committees that are competent in this field.

The Trade and Technology Council was presented in December 2020 by the European Commission, before its launch on 29 September in Pittsburgh. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
