15/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The “sustainable biomass” potentially available in the European Union is more than sufficient to provide feedstock for liquid biofuels for aviation, shipping and some road transport, according to a study by Imperial College London Consultants published on 13 October, commissioned by Concawe, a research organisation founded by oil companies. Covering only feedstocks of agricultural, forestry and bio-waste origin included in Annex IX of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001) (RED II), this study first analyses the sustainable availability of biomass and then estimates the amount available for bioenergy after excluding demand for non-energy sectors. The sustainability criteria applied are those defined by RED II. Traditional crops for biofuels (first generation) are thus not included. See the study: https://bit.ly/3lLxoMe (DG)
