15/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 14 October, the European Parliament awarded the Pegasus project the 2021 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize. Coordinated by the ‘Forbidden Stories’ consortium, journalists from around the world who contributed to the Pegasus project revealed that the spyware of the same name, developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, had been used to monitor the activities of at least 180 journalists from several countries (India, Mexico, Hungary, Morocco, France, etc.) as well as human rights defenders, academics, lawyers, trade unionists and political leaders. “The death of Daphne Caruana Galizia has provoked a resurgence of investigative journalism by colleagues committed to continuing her work. (...) Protecting and supporting journalists is in the vital interest of democratic societies”, said European Parliament President David Sassoli, himself a former journalist, at the award ceremony.
