28/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced on Monday 27 September that it had started to review a request for the use of a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Moderna. The EMA, which had begun evaluating the “data from the literature” available on the subject (see EUROPE 12785/18), will evaluate in particular the results of clinical trials currently being conducted by the company. However, it recalls that it is not convinced of the “urgency” of administering an additional dose to those considered not to be at risk (see EUROPE 12782/22). Recommendations on the administration of vaccines, however, remain the prerogative of national health authorities. At this stage, 20 Member States recommend an additional dose for immunocompromised people. Discussions are underway in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Sweden, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (see EUROPE 12798/6). (AC)
