EU funds creation of database centralising information on media ownership in each Member State

28/09/2021 (Agence Europe)The European Commission announced on Monday 27 September the launch of a project called Euromedia Ownership Monitor. This project, funded by the EU but coordinated by the University of Salzburg, is likely to result in a database of information on media ownership in each EU Member State by September 2022. The European Commission believes that such a tool should make possible conflicts of interest and competition issues more visible. The EU will support the project with €1 million. Those who will work on this project were selected through a call launched by the Commission in December 2020, which targeted stakeholders working in the field of media freedom and pluralism, both at a European and local level, the Commission explained. The institution states that a second call will be published in the coming weeks. (AC)
