European Commission presents three “Energy Compacts” with intergovernmental organisations

The European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson presented three Energy Compacts, in partnership with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), on Thursday 23 September at a high-level energy dialogue held on the occasion of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to the Commission, these three compacts will help “mobilise the investments necessary to reach universal energy access and to accelerate the clean energy transition around the world”.

On the first project, the Commission will work with the IEA to prepare zero-emission energy roadmaps for countries relying on nuclear energy.

The EU institution will also cooperate with IRENA to provide in-depth regional analyses of the potential and options for renewable energy, energy efficiency, infrastructure, access to energy and cross-border cooperation. These regional energy transition perspectives will cover Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. They will include an assessment of investment needs and socio-economic impact.

As regards the third compact, the Commission will work with Denmark, Germany, IRENA and other partners to develop a green hydrogen catalogue to give global impetus to this technology. This will include a commitment to cooperate on the development of renewable hydrogen with the African Union as part of the Africa-EU Green Energy Initiative.
