Europe could do without nearly 48.8 GW of excess fossil fuel capacity, according to Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air

21/09/2021 (Agence Europe)In a report published on Tuesday 21 September, the independent research organisation Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air estimated that around 48.8 Gigawatts (GW) of electricity generation capacity from fossil fuel plants in nine European countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain and Turkey) can be considered as excess capacity that Europe could eliminate without risk to security of electricity supply. The 48.8 GW is 77% coal-fired and represents 17% of Europe’s total fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, according to the report, which was produced in collaboration with the organisation Transition Zero. The paper also points out that the removal of this excess capacity could result in annual savings of €1.9 billion in fixed operating and maintenance costs.
