UK supports goal of carbon neutrality for global shipping by 2050

Brussels, 13/09/2021 (Agence Europe)On Monday 13 September, the UK announced its support for the target of zero global shipping emissions by 2050. “This would be a significant increase in ambition for a sector that currently accounts for 3% of global emissions”, the UK Department for Transport said in a statement. To contribute to this, the country is counting on the entry into service of ‘zero emission’ ships in its waters by 2025. In addition, the UK does not intend to stop at the maritime sector. A ban on the sale of petrol and diesel trucks and the carbon neutrality of domestic flights throughout the country are planned for 2040. International flights will have to wait until 2050, by which time the UK hopes to be able to achieve overall carbon neutrality in transport. (TM)
