Borrell underlines European apprehensions about political situation

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, underlined, on 10 September, the EU’s “apprehensions” regarding the preservation of the democratic acquis in Tunisia, “which alone is able to guarantee the stability and prosperity of the country”.

The free exercise of legislative power and the resumption of parliamentary activity are part of this achievement and must be respected”, he stressed at a press briefing in Tunis alongside President Kaïs Saïed.

The High Representative said that, in the complicated economic context of the country, it was important to lead Tunisia towards the restoration of institutional stability by preserving these democratic foundations. “And this, by remaining attentive to the wishes and aspirations of the Tunisian people, within the framework of an open and transparent dialogue, which will allow Tunisia to set off again on the path of democratic consolidation”, said Mr Borrell.

While stressing the EU’s respect for Tunisia’s sovereignty, he recalled the Union’s attachment to the country’s democratic roots and respect for the Rule of law and fundamental rights and freedoms.

It will ultimately be on the actions and concrete measures that will be taken in the coming weeks that we will determine how we can better support and accompany Tunisia’s democracy, stability and prosperity”, he warned. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
