08/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission on Wednesday 8 September approved the addition of Hungarian ‘Szegedi tükörponty’ fish to the EU’s register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). ‘Szegedi tükörponty’ is a fish of the carp species, produced in the Szeged region, near Hungary’s southern border, where a system of fish ponds was created. The alkaline water in the ponds gives the fish a special vitality and resilience. The flaky, reddish, flavoursome flesh of the fish raised in these ponds, as well as its fresh, unmistakable aroma, can be directly attributed to the specific saline soil. The new name will be added to the list of 1,563 products already protected at EU level in the eAmbrosia database. (LC)
